| Usually I don't like dining in hotel restaurants because I always view the food as more geared towards the foreigners palate, but this one took me by surprise. Marinated goose is a good cold starter, and there are some real nice Chinese desserts. Of course you get the strong gongfu tea served in little cups before and after your meal. The only problem with this restaurant--- the price reflects the prestigious 5-star status of Palace Hotel, which means that the bill is at least twice as expensive as any restaurants on the street but still comparable to an average meal in the West. | |||||

| The first restaurant in China that serves Imperial Dinners, normally eaten over 6 meals. But for a fraction of the price, you can sample some of the dishes in one meal without putting too much damage to your wallet. There are several set meals to choose from, ranging from RMB200-500 per person, and you can request to change the some of the dishes. A real dining experience. | |||||

| Go early if you want to sample good Chinese vegetarian food, as the restaurant closes at 8.30pm. The place is pretty casual and the staff are very friendly there; but go with someone who can speak Mandarin or read Chinese menu. The names of the dishes may lead you to think that they serve meat dishes, but all the dishes are strictly vegetarian but look just like the real thing and taste just as good! | |||||

| The most famous Peking duck restaurant chain in China. There are two dining sections, one for locals and the other for foreigners. I prefer the locals section, as the atmosphere is a lot more informal, the food is nicer (and cheaper!), and there are more to choose from as well! However, if you don't have an oriental look, you will probably be led to the foreigners section. The standard seems to have dropped when I revisited in October 2000. | |||||

| Located in one of the hutongs next to Prince Gong's Residence, make sure you have clear directions of how to get there or you will have to opt for a cab. However once you've got there you'll be rewarded with excellent Sichuan food. Being lazy, I opted for a set menu which included some of the specialities such as Tea-smoked Duck and braised sea-cucumbers. | |||||
