| In the attempt by Michelin-starred Heston Blumenthal to revive this roadside restaurant chain, Little Chef Popham on the westbound side of A303 was the first branch to undergo the radical change, and the transformation was well-documented on the Channel 4 show. While the restaurant has been given a more modern improved look, and the menu has been updated to bring it into the 21st century, however the quality has been disappointing. The Early Starter breakfast came with a fried-egg covered in an unappealing pool of vinegar (I think the original Heston’s idea was just a few drops, but maybe the kitchen staff has been a bit heavy-handed), a rather anemic sausage, a greasy bacon, a small bowl of baked beans, and two thick pieces of toast. The omelette with smoked salmon was overcooked, resulting in some very rubbery eggs and salmon scraps. Maybe I am being harsh here, and I should really go back and try lunch or early dinner there (it closes at 7pm). Not sure about a large centre table with bar stools, as many people used that as a waiting area for the more traditional tables. Speed of service is crucial for these roadside eateries, while it’s quick for the front-line staff to seat the customers down, the serving staff are certainly taking their time in taking orders and bringing food to the tables. | |||||
