| Nathan Outlaw is one of the most talented young chefs in Britain today. Ever since I tried his cooking back in 2004, I always wanted to go to his restaurant in Cornwall. I failed to get to the Black Pig, and then failed again to go to St Ervan Manor simply because it's so far from London, so third time lucky, I managed to go to his restaurant in Fowey. Even when armed with high hope, the restaurant delivered something that was above the expectation. The amuse-bouche of cod with garlic soup was amazing - the fish was moist and perfectly cooked, and the subtle flavour of the garlic did not overpower the freshness of the fish either. Many of the dishes on the tasting menu came with a "wow" factor - scallops with celeriac, curry and apple; cured salmon with marinated beetroot risotto, horseradish and dill (I am not even a fan of beetroot and I thought the different flavours blended in perfectly); brill with mushrooms, kale, parsley and garlic; rabbit and ham with jerusalem artichoke, walnut and watercress salad; venison with chicory and orange, parsnip and espresso; caramel poached pear with caramel mousse and amaretto ice-cream; peanut butter mousse with banana ice-cream and esprresso syrup. The venison was tender and cooked to perfection. A truly memorable meal - the restaurant windows are facing River Fowey, and the service was attentive, young and friendly. | |||||
